Tassili N’Ajjer

Tassili N’Ajjer plateau holds prehistoric rock paintings of hippopotamus and buffalo which are still preserved in caves. The highlands feature the vestiges of people living in African Sahara in 6,000 BC and the first century AD. Isolated old trees bring back the memory of a damper climate that reigned in the old times. The waterscape of Ihrir Oasis mixed with forests nestles endemic Saharan cypress or 'tarout', wild olive and myrtle. Deep gorges or ‘wadis’, waterholes ‘gueltas’, rocky and sandy terrains, rivers, agro-ecosystems and rangelands are a safe haven for the Dorcas gazelle, cheetah, fennec fox, Rüppel’s fox, Arabian camel, and Mzab gundi. Tassili N’ Ajjer is home to the Egyptian vulture, golden eagle and many species of raptors. The biosphere neighborhoods feature cultural landmarks in Sabbiba and Emzad and Ahaggar Cultural Park, the second largest national park in Algeria. Local communities bring together the Tuaregs, the sedentary and nomadic indigenous people.
