Under the Patronage of the Minister of Environment, new insights on biodiversity conservation and cultural heritage protection were at the heart of the discussions held on Thursday April 26, 2018 during a workshop entitled "Biodiversity Conservation: Within and Beyond UNESCO Designated Sites in Lebanon". The workshop was organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Lebanon and the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Sciences in the Arab region in Cairo and Beirut as part of the GEF project 'Sustainable Land Management in the Qaraoun Catchment'. The main purpose of the workshop was to introduce UNESCO designated sites including Biosphere Reserves, Global Geoparks and World Heritage Sites as well as to identify and expose local biodiversity hotspots and natural and cultural landmarks in Zahle, Rachaya and West Bekaa. The workshop also shed light on the link with the SLMQ project and the contribution of UNESCO designated sites in sustainable land management. The workshop brought together a wide range of stakeholders including central authorities, local authorities, UN agencies, international organizations, professionals from various sectors, Non-Governmental Organizations, academic institutions as well as public and private schools.

A filed inspection visit organized by Sheikh Saleh Abou Mansour -president of Jabal El Sheikh Municipalities Federation, was made the next day on April 27, 2018 to Jabal El Sheikh (Mount Hermon) with Eng. Dominique Choueiter, UNDP-SLMQ Project officer to delineate the area and cluster of villages to be part of the inspiring site to be designated by UNESCO.
